4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, annoying trackpad   May 13, 2010

When my old laptop died (and my eyes start to water even thinking of her), I realised it was about time to replace her. My budget was not massive, so I started looking at netbooks. Then I found I could get this laptop for about £50 more, and seeing the specs, couldn't not go for it.

They advertise 8 hours battery life, and my anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that could be true. I was using the laptop in Philadelphia airport, forgot to hibernate it when putting it in my bag, pulled it out at Heathrow, and it still had 30% battery life. Ok, it may not have been doing anything other than heating up my bag, but I still found that impressive.

The keyboard and trackpad are obviously designed to compete with Apple's range of laptops, and the keyboard is lovely (and it is, very nice tactile feedback, buttons the right sizes and in the right places). The control button on the left is in the right place, with the function key to its right (though that took a while getting used to as it was swapped on my old laptop), but some of the function functions aren't placed so well, for example the windows media player controls way up in the top right of the keyboard. The full size numpad works well, though that does put your typing and trackpad slightly to the left of centre. The trackpad's "multitouch" is actually just annoying. You try to move your finger, and instead end up zooming out of the webpage, or scrolling like crazy. The trackpad buttons themselves are actually one button with a bar underneath in the middle, so if you like to push the buttons near the centre of the trackpad, it might not register.

Powerwise, it's not a beast. I mostly play games that are a few years old. It stutters playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and takes a while in later rounds of multiplayer Civ 4. It's not brilliant at HD video, but for most other purposes it's powerful enough.

The laptop is incredibly light, very bright screen, has a decent volume (I can hear the opening theme to Dexter even while my bath is running) and for the price I paid, is excellent value.

5 out of 5 stars Battery Life at last !   April 7, 2010
Ian Murray
At last a laptop that works as a laptop. Now when I go places, I frequently leave the power cable/charger at home, because this laptop lasts.

Good points - Designed to use less power by having a cooler processor and video card, and therefore runs it's one fan. slowly and quietly with cool air coming out. The processors run unusually cool - currently reading 33 degrees Celsius (using SpeedFan) compared to 75 to 85 degrees C from my previous laptops. There are several other power saving features such as auto-switching off of the DVD drive when on battery and not in use, which makes me thoroughly recommend this product for anyone who wants a machine with a long battery life.

The lid is thin and made of metal and is cold to the touch, which feels strange but this makes me think that the screen is stronger and less likely to twist and brake.

O find the speakers have a very good stereo image, much better than any other laptop I have heard, but in a noisy place I find the output volume is not enough

Bad points - the keyboard consists of flat keys so that in low light conditions I find it difficult to work out which key is the one you want - the home keys have small raised bits which at least helps a bit.

Other points - power cable plugs in on right side next to network RJ45 socket, a USB socket and the DVD drive. Left side has two video sockets (15-pin and HDMI) plus 3 x USB and headphone and microphone sockets.

Overall - Having owned this model for about 5 months now, I would recommend this laptop to anyone and will be definitely be considering ACER models in future. My comparison laptop knowledge includes several HP, Compaq and Toshiba laptops.

4 out of 5 stars decent laptop for the money + great battery life   September 4, 2009

I have bought hundreads of products online over the past 12 years and this is the first customer review i have written. Why might you ask? Because i fundamentally disagree with the last review and there are no others for this product on amazon to offer a balanced story.

My company bought this product a couple of weeks ago after i fully researched laptops between the £500-£800 mark. I am the director in an ecommerce company with an unhealthy interest in technology hence i know a little about computers.

Overall i rate this product 4/5 as whilst it is definitely underpowered if you use it for power hungry applications such as web design or web build or for gaming it is a great machine if you use it for office products, surfing the web or other relatively power hungry applications.

I have installed an early release of Windows 7 on the machine (64 bit version to utilise the full 4 gb ram) and it works great. The battery life is amazing and for the size the laptop is extremely light. It is good on the environment (due to low power consumption) and has a nice screen.

The build quality is not 10/10 however i would put build quality at the 8/10 mark.

Overall, if in doubt type in the name of the laptop in to google and you will find many reviews from much more informed people than us and they generally rate this product as 4/5. As a result, and based on my own experience, i do the same.
